FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis is an advanced form of gum disease that destroys the bone and tissue supporting your teeth. It is caused by bacteria in dental plaque and, if left untreated, leads to tooth loss. Dr. David Leung can diagnose and treat all stages of gum disease.

How many visits does periodontal treatment take?

Most patients require 2–4 appointments for initial scaling and root planing, followed by a re-evaluation visit 4–6 weeks later. Surgical treatment, if needed, is planned after this assessment.

Does gum disease treatment hurt?

We use local anesthesia during treatment, so most patients are comfortable throughout. Some tenderness for a few days after is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Most healthy adults with sufficient bone volume are good candidates. Dr. Leung will take x-rays and evaluate your bone and gum health at your consultation to determine the best option for you.
