How much gum recession is normal?

Any visible root surface is a sign of recession that should be evaluated. Minor recession (1–2 mm) may be monitored; more significant recession typically warrants treatment.

Will my gums grow back naturally?

No. Gum tissue that has receded will not regenerate on its own. A soft tissue graft is currently the gold standard for covering exposed roots.

Is gum grafting painful?

The donor site (usually the palate) causes the most discomfort. Most patients describe it as similar to a pizza burn for a few days. Prescription pain medication is provided.
